After about 30 years in theatre and opera, Thom started creating large-scale installation art and pursuing curatorial projects. In 2006, he was commissioned by the National Capital Commission in Ottawa and was in residence at La Société des arts technologiques [SAT] in Montreal to develop The Balloons. He then received his first major visual arts' commission from curator Clara Hargittay and conceived Confinement of the Intellect for Scotiabanck's Nuit Blanche 2006 in Toronto. Partnering with Jenny McCowan (Thomas+Guinevere), he then presented versions of the artwork, re-titled The Encampment on Roosevelt Island in New York City and Major's Hill Park in Ottawa. Recently they presented a new version of The Encampment commissioned by Luminato Festival 2012 and the War of 1812 Bicentennial on the grounds of Historic Fort York. 200 civilian stories from 1812 were transposed into installations inside 200 tents by 125 Creative Collaborators. This coming August, Thom will be in NYC with Jenny-Anne McCowan to undertake a development workshop of a new work entitled Scarecrows at the invitation of Socrates Sculpture Park. Please visit www.thomasandguinevere.com for more information. Thom's curatorial interest started in 2005 when he co-curated and produced Interactive 05 with Clara Hargittay for the Toronto International Art Fair with a focus on interactive media art in public spaces. He then curated for Le Labo - Contact 2007, and then Zone A for Toronto's Scotiabanks's Nuit Blanche 2009. He then curated Futurism Today or NOT!, an Independent Project for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2011, the first in a curatorial trilogy about the art movements of the early 20th century in partnership with the Distillery Historic District. The trilogy will conclude next year with a look at Surrealism.
