LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE welcomes the Canadian-Mexican artist Michelle Teran for a lengthy site-specific residency Mixité that started on September 1st and will end on December 20. Currently she is developing a series of works that examine crisis subjectivities within the scope of recent (post-2011) political movements. Her recent work has turned to the Spanish eviction crisis; focusing her research on the right-to-housing movement operating throughout the country, in which she is producing films, texts and performance that document the everyday realities of contemporary crisis on individual lives and the strategies developed to provide creative resistance against the injustice produced by a neo-liberal economy. During her residency at LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE, Michelle expands on this research by focusing on right-to-housing issues within Québec, and within the scope of recent protests against governmental austerity measures. In her residency project, Mixité, she has been following different organisations who advocate the right-to-housing: Pech-Sherpa, BAIL, Comité Populaire Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Mères et Monde and FRAPRU. Five short films made from these encounters focus on the work carried out by each organization. Video reportages of events which have taken place throughout October and November in Québec City accompany these films. These include La Nuit des Sans-Abri and various moments around the social strike: occupations of the office of Liberal MNA, Sébastien Proulx and the Banque Nationale, as well as street protests and actions. Michelle Teran brings these documents together with some material produced from her work in Spain. The main highlight is a transcript from a discussion which took place in Madrid between a psychologist and four women, concerning their personal experiences with eviction. This text has been translated into French, as part of her residency. Michelle Teran will present these films and other elements of her research as an installation. A public reading of the translated text followed by a discussion will accompany the installation. All events will take place at LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE.
