Tiempo muerto

Friday November 12th at 8 pm
In 1983, while living in Japan, Humberto Chávez discovers Butoh and consequently develops an obsession for repetition. He realises that this form of artistic expression reveals the breach in time and space. From that moment on, he’s tried to illustrate this interpretation of repetition using a personal diary, a practice that can be seen as a concept of repetition where stories develop in a minimalist way, through daily events. Within loss (or ‘idle time’ - Tiempo Muerto), the Mexican artist is therefore able to measure time. Creation process is made possible by lost objects, lost situations and lost sentiments. Without loss, there is no creation. A gathering of situations of ‘idle time’ described in the artist’s diary are integrated into the installation. Video and photographic images of temporally deteriorated landscapes (abandoned spaces) mix with mobile objects making reference to the City of Fedora in the novel by Italo Calvino Invisible Cities. Here, we discover the way things might have been if, for some reason or another, they did not exist as we know them.
