Oscar M. García is a conceptual Mexican artist who broaches diverse social phenomena such as political migration, drug traffic, every-day collective memory, oblivion and indifference. His project, Construction of a signal, aims to beget a sequence of visual studies on smoke – ephemeral manifestation of a circumstance, that dissipates and falls into oblivion. By using the approach of scientific illustrations, the artist initiates a reflexion on the systems of mass communication that, while being a natural and social occurrence of big importance, are symbolically represented by the image of this evanescent element, whose nature refers to the more general notion of transformation of matter. Oscar M. García brings up the idea that the shown works of art can function as a comparative metaphor to the eruption of Popocatepetl (Mexican volcano, located near the capital), to the violence in Mexico and all over the world, but also, to the apparent transformation of the church, and to oil spill disasters. With Construction of a signal, the artist suggests to reconsider the study of these phenomena, to « freeze » the signal in a mnemonic gesture, while underlining its dynamic constitution and the importance of its evolutive structure. García seeks to detect the exact moment when memory gives way to indifference, solidifying the phenomena and erasing the traces of their dynamism. The entire exhibition is conceived over the image of smoke – visual and sound matter that infiltrates the atmosphere while evaporating, as a line in the water. Oscar M. García’s site-specific residency is possible thanks to the long-date collaboration between CALQ (QC) and FONCA (MX).
